Summary This paper reports an experience made in building a model and analysing the dependability of an actual railway station interlocking control system developed by Ansaldo Trasporti: the ACC CIS (Computer Interlocking System). Despite our decision to restrict the analysis to the Safety Nucleus subsystem a considerable effort was necessary in order to cope with complexity and size. We have identified a modelling strategy based on a modular, hierarchical decomposition which allow the use of different methods and tools for modelling the various level of the hierarchy. This paper focuses on the analyses made in order to deal with some of the simplifying assumptions made in the models. The approximation error resulting from a given assumption (in a selected set) has been estimated by comparing the results obtained by releasing the assumption itself. This comparison allowed us to select those simplifying assumptions which did not invalidate the results of the models and to focus on those which required a more careful and detailed modelling effort. The paper reports some examples of the extensive analyses performed towards the validation of the assumptions made.

Investigation of SLIM Dynamic Models Based on Vector Control for Railway Applications

Although, Single-Sided Linear Induction Motor (SLIM) utilization has increased in railway applications due to their numerous advantages in comparison to Rotational Induction Motors (RIM), there are some sophistication in their mathematical models and electrical drive. This paper focuses on the problems of SLIM modeling, with assuming end-effect on the basis of Field Oriented Control (FOC) as a ...

Sensitivity Analysis of Vibration Response of Railway Structures to Velocity of Moving Load and Various Depth of Elastic Foundation

Railway structures are one of the most important structures in transportation. So the lack of precise study of their dynamic behavior leads to irreparable damages. The significant factors contributing to the accurate analysis of the dynamic behavior of railways are the type of load and foundation used in it. In this study, an Euler-Bernoulli beam subjected to a moving load on a finite depth fou...

Iranian Railway System Performance Analysis Using Computer Simulation and Data Envelopment Analysis Methods

In this paper, a discrete event simulation model of Iranian railway system is used for analyzing performance of the system in freight sector. The model analysis shows more sensitivity of the system on loading and unloading facilities than on number of wagons and locomotives. System optimization through simulation optimization technique, shows that more than 4% of all wagons available in the n...

Development of a Finite Element Methodology for Flexible Track Models in Railway Dynamics Applications

The dynamic analysis of railway vehicles involves the construction of three independent models: the vehicle model; the track model; and the wheel-rail contact model. In this work, a multibody formulation with Cartesian coordinates is used to describe the kinematic structure of the rigid bodies and joints that constitute the vehicle model. A methodology is also proposed in order to create detail...

A Dynamic Model for Evaluating the Utility of Railway Transit Corridors; a Case study of Bandar Abbas-Sarakhs Corridor

Currently, road transportation is the main mode of freight transit in Iran and about 90% of freight transit is done through this mode of transportation which is not in line with the transportation policies that based on them 70% of the freight transit should be done through road transportation and 30% of the freight transit should be done through rail transportation. However, Iran's railway net...
